Biography

  • Born in Thessaloniki in 1949.
  • Graduate of the Department of Physiognostic, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1971).
  • Master’s degree in Geological Sciences, CWRU, Cleveland, Ohio (USA) (1976).
  • Doctorate, Geological Department, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1983).
  • Assistant, Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor, School of Geology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1977-2011). Since 2012 Professor Emeritus of the Department.
  • Visiting Professor at the CWRU Department of Geological Sciences in Cleveland during sabbatical leave (1/6 to 30/11/87, 4/3 to 4/9/91, 28/3 to 14/4/92, 1/3 to 31/8/97 and 2/12/2005 to 2/3/2006).
  • He taught 14 different courses to undergraduate and graduate students.
  • He supervised 31 master’s and doctoral theses, as well as 22 diploma theses.
  • He has a total of 170 scientific publications, writings and papers and 152 research projects and scientific reports.
  • He published 4 textbooks and three books of historical content.
  • He edited the publication of proceedings of National conferences on Greek marbles (5) and Greek history (6).
  • He participated in 115 domestic and international conferences.
  • Expert, Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate Change (1999-2014).
  • Trainer of employees and marble workers (1993-present).
  • Trainer of environmental education teachers. KPE Ziaka Grevena (2007 & 2009).
  • Evaluator of the research program of the Research Committee of the Technical University of Crete (2010).
  • Evaluator of research projects of the Rustaveli Foundation of Georgia (2012 & 2015).
  • He gave many lectures, scientific and popular, in Greece and abroad.
  • Member of several scientific organizations and reviewer of scientific journals.
  • He writes regularly in newspapers and magazines and gives interviews to radio and television stations on the exploitation of Greece’s mineral wealth. In recent years also on issues of refugee Hellenism.
