Biography

Dr. Christos Roumpos holds a diploma in Mining Engineering and Metallurgist from NTUA (1988), with a master’s degree in “Organization and Management of Industrial Systems”, specializing in energy management and environmental protection systems (2000, University of Piraeus-NTUA), and a PhD in Mining, with a thesis title “Decision making system for the exploitation of deposits” (NTUA, 2004), with distinctions in his undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Since 1991 he has been working in PPC S.A., with main objects the mineral exploration, modeling and evaluation of mining deposits, the mining design of surface exploitations, the environmental rehabilitation of mining projects and the economic analysis of mining and energy investments. He currently holds the position of Director in the Mine Exploitation and Completion Directorate.

Since 2001 he has participated in the teaching of courses: Mining Exploitation II, Design of Outdoor Exploitations, Mining Appraisal, Methods of Underground Exploitation, Mining Economics, Project Management and Management Principles and Production Organization, at the School of Mining-Metallurgical Engineering of NTUA and today he is a scientific associate of the Laboratory of Rock Extraction of this School. From 2007 to 2014 he taught continuously at the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering of the Technical University of Crete the courses: Exploitation I (surface exploitations-lignites) and Analysis of technological systems of mining and technical projects, under contracts PD 407/80. In this Department, in 2012, he was elected to the rank of Assistant Professor, with the subject of “Surface mining exploitations”. From this position, he taught for two months in 2015 and covered most of a semester course. This employment did not continue, due to his non-inclusion in part-time employment. He has also lectured, as part of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, at the Technical University of Wroclaw, Poland (Erasmus program), at the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering of the Polytechnic School of the University of Western Macedonia, at the Department of Industrial Management and Technology of the University of Piraeus and at the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the University of Athens. He has also had advisory support in more than 30 diploma and postgraduate theses, and has participated as a member of respective Committees.

He has carried out more than 280 studies covering all stages of mining planning (mineral exploration, modeling and evaluation of deposits, design and planning of surface mines/mine development projects, economic evaluation of mining and energy investments, equipment selection, environmental design of mining projects, feasibility studies of expropriations, operational action plans, etc.).

He has published more than 160 papers in international scientific journals and conferences with a review committee. In the context of his university teaching, he has also authored more than 15 issues of university notes (NTUA-Technical University of Crete), with subjects: Design and Planning of Outdoor Mines, Mining Appraisal, Management of Technical Projects, Analysis of Technological Systems of Mining and Technical Projects, Economic Analysis – Exploitation of Mineral Raw Material Deposits, Applications of Operational Research in Mining, Decision Theory. He has participated as a researcher and scientific coordinator on behalf of PPC in nine international research projects. He was also the scientific editor of two mining works (author: V.V. RZHEVSKY), which were translated into Greek.

For a period of about 25 years he was Editor of the scientific publication “Mining-Metallurgical Chronicles”. He is a member of the editorial boards of: Journal of Sustainable Mining, Societal Impacts (Elsevier), Research Directions: Mine Closure and Transitions (Cambridge University Press), International Mining Journal “Górnictwo Odkrywkowe” of Poltegor Institute and “World of Mining – Surface & Underground”. He is also a regular member of the Society of Mining Professors, the Hellenic Society for Operational Research, and the Scientific Society of Mineral Wealth Technologists. He is also a reviewer of more than 250 articles in 35 international scientific journals.
